LONDON, April 7: Pakistani expatriates in the United Kingdom have supported the holding of referendum and said that the continuation of current policies was vital to attract foreign investment and ensure political stability in the country.

Commenting on President Gen Pervez Musharraf’s decision to ask the people for their support for himself and his government’s reforms, they said, pragmatism demanded both the restoration of democracy and continuation of present policies.

Pakistan’s economic situation, worldwide acceptance of Musharraf’s policies, situation in Afghanistan and tension on the eastern border, were important factors justifying his continuation as head of state. Only a strong, honest and committed leadership, could steer the country out of difficulties, they said.

Former assistant general auditor of Asian Development Bank, Kalim Haqqani, said the performance of President Musharraf’s government “on economic side has been impressive and it is a rare record.” He said, “continuity aspect is extremely important” as he had led very good economic team with finance minister Shaukat Aziz.

“I am for referendum. I think it is a good idea and hope Pakistanis will give him the mandate “for continuing his policies, he told newsmen here on Sunday .

Kalim Haqqani said debt rescheduling by Paris Club and release of four tranche by the International Monetary Fund had no linkage with the events of Sept. 11. Rather it was the economic performance of Musharraf government and fulfilling the conditions of the IMF which made it possible.

President Musharraf, he said, had not “wasted two-and-a-half year in useless witch hunt” as was done in the past. Instead, he concentrated on moving forward which was a good thing indeed.

The economic figures quoted by the president during his speech were amazing. Haqqani said, rise in foreign remittances was an indication of overseas Pakistanis in policies of the present government.

President of British Muslim Elder Society Prince Muhammad Ali Khan supported the idea of referendum. He urged the people to support President Musharraf for the revival of economy and elimination of corruption. He urged President Musharraf not to allow those politicians come into power who have looted billions of dollars.

Chairman, Pakistan Christian Alliance UK -Europe, James Shera, said continuation of President Musharraf was necessary.—APP
