Bindaree wins Grand National

LIVERPOOL (England), April 6: Bindaree, ridden by Jim Culloty, battled to a 20-1 success in the Aintree Grand National on Saturday.

Second place in the 40-strong field went to 10-1 shot What’s Up Boys, partnered by Richard Johnson, with 8-1 favourite Blowing Wind, the mount of Tony McCoy in third.

Bindaree, a chance ride for Culloty, fought back in the final stages to regain the lead and score by one and three quarter lengths.

Winning jockey Culloty was celebrating his second big succcess in less than a month after capturing the Cheltenham Gold Cup last month on Best Mate.

Result (run over four miles and four furlongs (7.2 kms):

1. Bindaree 20-1 (ridden by Jim Culloty); 2. What’s Up Boys 10-1 (Richard Johnson); 3. Blowing Wind 8-1 favourite (Tony McCoy); 4. Kingsmark 16-1 (Ruby Walsh)

Distances: one and three-quarter lengths, 27 lengths, nine lengths

Winner owned by Raymond Mould, trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies in England.
