Farmers demand water

Published April 5, 2002

BADIN, April 4: A complete strike was observed in Nindo town of Badin district on Wednesday against non-supply of irrigation water to Ali Wah canal for three months.

The shops, trade centres and pan and cigarette cabins remained closed.

A protest rally was staged by the traders, citizens and growers which marched through the main thoroughfares of the town.

The protest was led by Shaikh Salamat, Jumo Khaskheli, Habibullah Khatti and others.

They were raising slogans against the irrigation officials.

They alleged that the officials were involved in stealing and selling the water to influential landlords through illegal rotation.

The villagers were unable even to cultivate fodder for their cattle and were compelled to use brackish subsoil water for drinking purposes.

Meanwhile, some youngsters burnt tyres and disrupted the traffic for over one hour.

The farmers demanded of the Sindh governor to ensure immediate supply of irrigation water to Ali Wah canal.
