Consensus must on Thal canal

Published April 5, 2002

SHIKARPUR, April 4: Decisions like the construction of the greater Thal canal should be taken in accordance with the wishes and needs of the people of the four provinces so that no province can be deprived of its fundamental rights.

This was stated by Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi, the deputy secretary general of the Pakistan People’s Party, while speaking at a press conference here on Thursday.

He arrived here after participating in the death anniversary of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in Garhi Khuda Bukhsh Bhutto.

He said that the people were facing grave problems, including rising unemployment, law and order crisis and water shortage due to lack of proper attention by the undemocratic government.

He said that the people wanted democracy in the country to get their problems solved by a democratic government and hoped for transparent elections in Oct to restore democratic process in the country.

Mr Qureshi, who is also district Nazim of Multan, supported the district government system for the solution of the outstanding local problems.

He claimed that the district government system was formulated by the PPP government which could not introduce it due to political circumstances and the present government had implemented the same formula after making some changes in it.

To a question, he said that Benazir Bhutto will come back soon after the announcement of the election schedule to lead the election campaign of the party which, he claimed, will sweep the election.

SUICIDE: Two men committed suicide here and in a village near here the other day.

Nabi Bukhsh Soomro, 40, committed suicide by hanging himself in Saddar Mohalla here.

Mohammad Nawaz Brohi, 23, committed suicide in village Haji Khwasti Brohi by consuming poison in his house. The cause of the suicide is said to be some domestic problem.
