Governor asks officials to stop flow of contaminated water

SUKKUR, April 4: Sindh Governor Mohammedmian Soomro has directed the chief secretary of the province to take measures to stop the flow of saline and contaminated water from Punjab, which was ruining the agricultural lands in Daharki, Mirpur Mathelo and other border areas.

The governor asked him to discuss the issue with the officials of the National Drainage Programme (NDP) immediately.

The governor directed this while was talking to the elected representatives of Ghotki district at the residence of the district Nazim, Sardar Ali Gohar Maher, on Thursday.

The elected representatives of the area informed the governor that the water containing industrial waste was coming from the Punjab into Sindh and was accumulating in the low-lying areas of many parts of Ghotki district and effecting the agricultural lands adversely.

The governor assured that the problem would be put before the NDP on emergent basis and some solution would be found.

The elected representatives also complained about the shortage of water in Sindh and informed the governor that cotton sowing was due in the first week of May and the crop would be totally ruined if water shortage persisted by then.

Mr Soomro said that it was being endeavored that Sindh’s due share of water was supplied before the first week of May.

The elected representatives also complained that the desilting work of Ghotki Feeder canal was not done this year.

The irrigation officials, present on the occasion, said that funds for desilting of different canals of the province were so far not released.

The governor asked the irrigation officials to come to Karachi and meet the irrigation secretary for the release of the funds.

Some residents of the area complained about the worsening law and order situation in Ghotki district and that mobile medial teams had stopped visiting the area due to the shortage of funds.

The governor suggested that the district government should provide funds for this purpose.

The governor also underlined the importance of the presidential referendum and appealed to the elected representatives to participate in it to strengthen the system of devolution of power.

Our Khairpur correspondent adds: Sindh Governor Mohammedmian Soomro has recommended that general sales tax, recovered from the gas field in Nara, should be given to the Khairpur district government and local people should be preferably employed in the gas field.

He was talking to newsmen during his visit of Nara taluka on Thursday after inaugurating a gas field of the OMV Gas Company in Nara.

Khairpur District Nazim Nafeesa Shah demanded of the governor to give the GST of the gas field and the gas company to the district government to establish technical institutions and provide jobs to local people.
