SAHIWAL, April 4: Water released by the irrigation authorities for Sindh in the river Ravi has started eroding land and damaging standing crops of wheat and fodder (Barseen).
In the recent past, the river has eroded around 1,500 acres of land of Thatha Nijabat, Thatha Bilawal, Khund, Mulla Hamza Sharif, Khuh Sial and Khuh Wattooan villages forcing around 10,000 people to shift to other villages.
They also appealed to the governor to allot land to the people affected by the closure of Tutwala canal and write off their loans.
Meanwhile, the Punjab governor has ordered immediate relief measures on the appeal of affected people. He has also sought a report about the huge funds spent on protective dykes in 1991 and 1994.
DEATH SENTENCE: A man was convicted of killing his wife by a district and sessions judge on Thursday.
Maulavi Bashir Ahmad had shot his wife Kausar dead and injured his brother-in-law Sarwar on April 2, 2000, over a domestic dispute.
He was handed down death sentence and Rs120,000 fine for killing his wife and 20 years’ rigorous imprisonment for injuring his brother-in-law.
INQUIRY: The district coordination officer has appointed district revenue officer Malik Ghulam Farid Langrial as inquiry officer to probe allegations of sale of state land against MC officers Ghulam Habib and Ata Muhammad.
The accused had converted the land earmarked for a graveyard into 22 plots of five marlas each and sold them for Rs15 million. The accused also sold the land meant for Eidgah and a school.
