SIALKOT, April 2: The district police on Tuesday claimed to have arrested two homoeopaths from a factory in Khakherki (Gujranwala) for selling toxic wine which claimed 25 lives on March 28.

Sialkot SSP Muhammad Tahir told newsmen the police got some clues from the diary of main accused Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and raided the Mukhtar homoeopathy factory, a known place for preparation of toxic wine.

He said the police arrested two accused Ghulam Abbas and Fernandes Gill who told them that Bhutto purchased the liquor from them in quantity and sold it in the district and its outskirts.

Led by the two, the police raided Shahid Husain’s shop and recovered 1,000 bottles of toxic wine, the SSP claimed.

He assured Bhutto would soon be arrested.

URGED: Some social circles on Tuesday urged the Punjab IGP and the Gujranwala range DIG to resort to major reshuffle for improving the performance of the Sialkot police.

Expressing concern over the situation, they said police inspectors and sub-inspectors, who had worked as SHOs twice or thrice in the district, were hampering the success of the new system.

According to the official record, the complainants claimed their departmental performance was not satisfactory as the majority of these officials were involved in various cases of corruption. Dispensation of justice had become difficult in their presence, they added.

They urged the higher-ups to conduct a probe to unveil the faces of those marring the repute of the department.
