KARACHI: Muttahida seeks exemplary Punishment

KARACHI, April 2: Muttahida Qaumi Movement, on Tuesday, dubbed the Garden police headquarters as a “den of crime”, that produces criminals and is a major contributor in proliferation of crimes committed in the port city since long.

Addressing a press conference at the Press Club, deputy conveners of the MQM, Aftab Ahmed Shaikh, Nasreen Jaleel and Farooq Sattar slammed in the strongest words the heinous act of the violation of the sanctity of two innocent sisters by five police officials of the Nabi Bux police station near Garden police headquarters on the night between Sunday and Monday.

“Bike-snatching, plundering of passers-by and the harassing of people, specially women, have become routine at the surrounding area of the Garden police headquarters. The level of crime is increasing day-by-day,” Aftab Shaikh said.

He alleged that Karachi police has become out of control and unleashed a reign of terror to overawe the people of Karachi. They are not even obeying the orders of their superiors, he added.

“The custodians of the people have turned into enemies of their very lives and property,” he remarked.

Narrating the details of the heinous act committed by the police personnel, he said that the accused policemen identified as Malik Shafiq alias Malik Safara, Asif Nawaz, Tousif, Kashif and another unknown person barged into the flat of Abdul Sattar, a poor man and father of nine children (five daughters and four sons), located at Ramaswamy, and introduced themselves as CIA officials after showing their police cards.

“They tied two sons of Mr Sattar with a rope and gang-raped two of the sister till late in the night,” he informed.

He charged that the next day, when the father of victimized girls reached the concerned police station, SHO Zahid Hussain refused to lodge an FIR against the accused personnel.

However, later, succumbing to the pressure of the city administration and their high officials, they reluctantly registered the same.

According to him, SHO Zahid Hussain of the concerned police station did his utmost to conceal the incident by removing major evidence.

Aftab Sheikh said that out of the five culprits, only two were arrested, while SHO Zahid Hussain was given the mild punishment of suspension.

The MQM leader claimed that the affected family members are also being threatened of dire consequences by police personnel of the same station if they do not take the case back, besides being subjected to pressure tactics.

He demanded that the government award the culprits exemplary punishment and SHO Zahid Hussain be listed as one of the criminals, the Challan of the case be tried in an anti-terrorism court and the case be completed within one week to the satisfaction of the affected family.—PPI
