KARACHI, April 2: Karachi City Council unanimously approved a resolution severely condemning the gang-rape of two sisters in their house by cops in the Ramaswamy area.

The resolution was moved by Siddique Rathore, UC Nazim from Liaqatabad Town; Najmi Alam and Zubair Chandio of Saddar Town and Muslim Pervaiz of Gulberg Town.

Those who moved the resolution spoke in strong words against the role of police in the promotion of crime in the city and informed that about forty per cent of cops in the city are or have been involved in different crimes.

Speakers informed in detail about the incident in which five police personnel in uniform entered the house of a resident of Ramaswamy area on the night between Sunday and Monday, and raped two sisters in front of their family members, after tying them up.

They called for exemplary punishment to the culprits and demanded of the city police chief to give a report in the City Council about such heinous crimes by policemen in Karachi.

Since the father of the victims suffered humiliation at the hands of the concerned Nabi Bux police station, where his report against the culprits was not accepted, the council members spoke against all officers in that police station.

They demanded punishment to the SHO and senior officers of the Nabi Bux police station.

Lady Councillor Rana, advocate, emphasized the functioning of the District Public Safety Commission that has been formed as a counter balance and to check irregularities in the police department.

However, Naib Nazim, Tariq Hasan, at this point, informed that notification from the provincial government regarding this matter has not been received.

Meanwhile, the resolution has demanded that cases against these five policemen be conducted in an anti-terrorism court, and called upon the authorities to hold an inquiry against all cops who have ever been involved in any criminal activity.

The resolution was approved with full support without opposition.

The City Council also approved Rs1.5 million to organize sports events and promote sports activities in the city during the current financial year.

The city officials said that the Sports and Community Development Department will organize at least those sporting competitions that were regularly organized by the defunct Karachi Metropolitan Corporation. —PPI
