ISLAMABAD, April 1: Muhammad Munir of PTCL Monday captured the President of Pakistan Gold Medal Golf Championship by four strokes carding seven under par 209 over 54 holes at the Islamabad Club course.

Munir, who had a score of three under par 69 scooped up the first prize of Rs 71,000 in the professional category. Muhammad Tariq, another PTCL golfer, took second place after a double bogey dented his chances on the last day and he ended up with one over par 73 for a total of 213, three under over three days.

Munir, with a score of 140 on the first two days, bogeyed holes No. four and six, but recovered quickly to strike birdies on the ninth, tenth, 14th and 17th holes and a fine eagle on the 18th.

Tariq, who was level with an aggregate of 140 with Munir after the first two days, saw his chances wrecked as he double bogeyed the 11th hole. He also had bogeys on the second, tenth and 13th holes.

Tariq, who collected a cash prize of Rs 48,000 chipped in four birdies, two on the front nine and another two while coming back as he scored 35 going out and 38 as he came back for a total of 73, one over par for the day.

Pakistan Navy’s Sabbir Iqbal claimed the third spot among the professionals with an overall score of 215.

In the amateur net category, Daniyal Jahangir claimed the gold medal carding 223 in three days while Tariq Afridi (224) and Wg. Cdr. Ehtisham (225) were second and third respectively.

Vaqas Ahmed took the honours in the gross competition topping with a score of 225 leaving Zeeshan with 227 in second place and Shahid Javed, who also had an identical 227, third.

The ladies net gold medal went to Asma Afzal Shami who completed the two days of competition with 151 while Sara Mahmood was a close second at 152.

Tahira Nazir took the ladies gross title with 170 and Jamila Jabbar, who was three strokes behind, was second.

Winner of the seniors net event was SF Hadi (145) and the gross title went to Brig. Ghafoor Raja (164). Azam Khan was the top junior in the net competition (143) while Hamza Amin (167) annexed the gross prize.

Finance Minister Shaukat Aziz gave away prizes to the winners of the tournament that was sponsored by Pakistan State Oil.

Meanwhile Tariq Kirmani, Managing Director of the sponsors offered to the Islamabad Golf Club organisers that his company would support the first hole of the nine that are to be added to the existing 18 holes at the club.
