ISLAMABAD, April 1: Pakistan ready to assist Afghanistan on multi-dimensional issues with a focus on rehabilitation of women, girls and children, who were the worst sufferers of the long drawn conflict of last many years.
This was stated by Minister for Women Development, Social Welfare, Dr Attiya Inayatullah at a consultative meeting with the first vice-chairman of Afghan interim government and minister for women affairs Dr Sima Samar here on Monday.
The planning commission deputy chairman, Shahid Amjad, was also present at the meeting.
Dr Samar briefed the minister on the Afghan government’s plan of action for rehabilitation of women and children and identified areas where collaboration from Pakistan would help the vulnerable groups in the war-torn country.
Appreciating Dr Samar’s interest and role in fostering collaboration in the fields of education, health and employment opportunities for women Dr Attiya said her ministry also attached priority to these areas and Pakistan would be available to develop programmes and activities which would directly benefit Afghan women in need.
Dr Samar informed that resumption of women education was among the top priorities of the Afghan interim government, besides creating viable system of providing medical care and employment opportunities to the hard-hit segment of the tribal society.
Dr Attiya pointed out that in the field of education Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) and the newly set up Virtual University would be effective in imparting education as it was not difficult to find experts of Pushto and Persian languages, customized education programmes could be developed to meet the needs of Afghan people.
She added that refresher courses and training programmes for trainers could also be conducted for the re-entry of those women into teaching profession who were teachers before but were denied to perform their professional duties during Taliban regime.
Training of medical and para-medical staff could also be catered for by the Pakistani institutions. Similarly in the field of vocational training and skill development Pakistan had a potential to offer meaningful assistance.— Our Reporter
