GUJRANWALA, April 1: A qanoongo of Hafizabad was arrested and sent to jail after the rejection of his bail application by an Anti-Corruption Court here on Monday.

The anti-corruption establishment had booked Mian Ali Riaz for allegedly receiving bribe from 10 landlords of Ghari Mitran village a few months ago. But he disappeared after getting an interim bail from the court.

The court also fined Rs10,000 each to his 10 guarantors — Muhammad Hanif, Ijaz Hussain, Asif Raza, Rashid Akhter, Ghulam Shabbir, Muhammad Hussain, Safder Abbas, Mian Wallayat, Malik Ali and Bashir Ahmad.

SHO SUSPENDED: The Range DIG suspended from service former Kotwali SHO on corruption charges and also issued him a show-cause notice here on Monday.

Ijaz Ahmad had picked Abdul Aziz from Jhelum in a false case and later released him after receiving a heavy bribe. An inquiry later found him guilty of charges.

SHOW-CAUSE NOTICES: The Naushera Virkan tehsil Nazim on Monday issued show-cause notices to seven tehsil council officials, including an accountant and a building inspector, on the charge of negligence of duty.

Tehsil Nazim Sardar Tariq Raza paid a surprise visit to the tehsil council office and found them absent from their duties.

EDUCATION: The government is taking solid steps for the promotion of education while education centres for adults are being set at town level in the district.

This was stated by provincial Social Welfare Minister Ms Shaheen Atiqur Rehman while speaking at the prize-giving ceremony of a girls high school here on Monday.

She said about 124 education centres for adults were being established at all major towns and THQs besides constructing an industrial home for women at a cost of Rs6.5 million.

Parents should not deprive their children especially girls of education, she said. An educated woman, she said, could play a vital role for the progress and prosperity of the country.

Later, she visited central jail and reviewed the condition of inmates. Jail authorities told her that there were 3,422 inmates, including 49 women, as against the capacity of 745.

DISMISSED: An election tribunal dismissed a writ petition of aspirant Rana Liaquat Ali against tehsil city union council No 15/51 Nazim Chaudhry Muhammad Rafiq and Naib Nazim Dr Ziauddin here on Monday.
