Pakistani sailor held in Texas

WASHINGTON, March 31: One of the four Pakistani sailors, who jumped ship in Norfolk, Virginia, earlier this month, has been arrested in San Antonio, Texas, the San Antonio Express-News reported on Sunday.

Ahmad Salman was staying with an acquaintance in an apartment when he was arrested by Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) officers on Saturday without incident, according to the report, which quoted INS officials.

The officials believe Salman might have come to San Antonio because he has an uncle who has a business in the city, The Express-News said. The other three missing sailors — Mohammad Nazir, Adnan Ahmad and Thulan Qadar — were still at large.

Their disappearance caused quite a stir in the US capital earlier this month, after a member of Congress erroneously alleged that the name of one of the missing was mentioned on a federal terrorist watch list.

With the events of Sept 11 fresh in people’s memory, even President George W. Bush was kept apprised of the manhunt, according to officials and media reports.—AFP
