Religious leaders’ meeting tomorrow
ISLAMABAD March 31: The Mutahidda Majlis-i-Amal (MMA), a conglomeration of six leading religo-political parties, will hold a meeting of the parties’ chiefs here on Tuesday to discuss the latest political developments, including President Pervez Musharraf’s intention to hold referendum, and to chalk out a joint line of action for the coming general election in the country.
The MMA, which is said to have virtually replaced the Pak-Afghan Defence Council, has already announced that it will contest the polls from a single platform with a common symbol and a manifesto.
It will, however, be a great test for the proposed meeting of the country’s top religious leadership, who after suffering a fatal setback to their pro-Taliban politicking, have for the first time got together to resist what they called the “onslaught of secular forces.”
Jamaat-i-Islami Chief Qazi Hussain Ahmed, who is the host of the meeting, will seek guidance from the heads of five other parties on whether or not he should accept President Pervez Musharraf’s standing invitation.
The meeting will discuss how to put up resistance to the proposed referendum.
