KARACHI: City govt offices being shifted to Civic Centre

KARACHI, March 31: Shifting of different offices of the city government from the old KMC building to the Civic Centre will start from Monday April 1, beginning with the DCO Karachi’s office which has been allotted space in the second floor of the building.

Shifting schedule and allocation of space to departments in the Civic Centre have been changed a number of times.

As per the final approval made by the committee appointed for allocation of space to set up City Government Secretariat in the Centre, the cash branch and telephone exchange on the ground floor has been given to the implementation cell of the Nazim secretariat .

The Nazim secretariat itself will be on the first floor along with the IT department, while the DCO office and some offices of IT department will be on the second floor.

The third floor will be used by the revenue department, whereas the project office (Lyari Development Authority ) and some offices of the works & services department will be on the fourth floor.

The other offices of the works and services department, the literacy department, the enterprise and investment promotion department, the education department and the media management department will be on the fifth floor.

The sixth floor will be shared by the agriculture department, the community development department and the secretariat of the defunct KDA. The seventh floor has been allocated to the finance & planning department, whereas the master plan department and the design bureau of the works & services department have been given the eighth floor.

The ninth floor will be shared by the finance & planning department, the Coordination Human Resource and the health department of the city government.

The tenth floor has been allocated to the capital city police office. The transport and communication department (T&CD), formerly the traffic engineering bureau of the defunct KDA and which is situated at eighth floor of the civic centre, will be moved out to the old KBCA office, away from the main building.

The EDO T&CD has expressed concern over the shifting the department which can cause damage to the studies and maps of Karachi prepared over the years. He has also demanded the authorities to furnish and renovate the KBCA building which has no proper arrangement for natural light and air to pass through.

According to a DO of the department, the root causes of all problems in Karachi is the absence of a master plan for the city and non-implementation of the transport policy. The irregular development of Karachi has caused shortage of space and necessary facilities while transport problems have added to the already charged atmosphere of the city.
