Naveen, Shahzad in tough group


KARACHI, March 30: Fourth seed Naveen Perwani and sixth seed Imran Shahzad are drawn in comparatively tougher groups in the Style National snooker championship being held at Karachi Gymkhana Billiards Hall from April 13 to 20.

According to draws gathered from Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Association (PBSA) Saturday, former Pakistan number two and veteran of several Asian events, Naveen is drawn in group “D” with talented Vishan Gir, Sindh Champion Shadab Baig, experienced Irfan Rasheed Khan and Hasan Shuja.

Imran Shahzad of Punjab is placed in group “F” with fancied province-mates Abu Saim, Saqib Butt, Muhammad Amin and dangerous Rambul Gul from Frontier Province.

Abu Saim, a losing pre-quarter finalist of Asian Snooker Championship has been given a wild-card entry after Aneel Bherwani decided to skip the event due to his foreign visit.

The defending champion and reigning national champion Farhan Mirza is placed in group “B” and Pakistan number Khurram Hussain is placed in group “A”.

Forty cueists from across the country will be taking part in the 8-day contest which carries a handsome cash purse of Rs.174,000.

Sindh have 16 cueists in the event followed by 15 from Punjab six from NWFP and three from Balochistan.

Top two players from each group will making the pre quarter final stage. The league matches in the event will be played in four sessions with first starting at 10.00 a.m. second at 12.30 p.m. third at 3.00 p.m. and final session break-off at 5.30 p.m.

The pre-quarterfinals will be played on April 18, the quarterfinal and semifinals on April 19 and best of 11 frames final on April 20.

Group “A” Khurram Agha, Faiq Malik, Younus Amir Bakhsh, Fahad Asif, Noman Awan.

Group “B” B. Farhan Mirza, Ahmer Shaikh, Qadeer Butt, Khurram Khan, Nadir Khan

Group “C” Muhammad Yousuf, Raja Rasheed, Raees Khan, Atif Mughal, Mustufa Hyder.

Group “D”. Naveen Perwani, Vishan Gir, Shadab Baig, Hasan Shuja, Irfan Rasheed Khan.

Group “E” Saleh Muhammad, Amit Perwani, Kamran Shah, Ahmed Bawany, Farhan Noor.

Group “F” Imran Shahzad, Abu Saim, Saqib Butt, Muhammad Amin, Rambul Gul.

Group “G” Atiq Latif Bakhsh, Arifullah , Muhammad Nazir, Inam-ur-Rehman, Naseer Khan.

Group “H” Shakeel Bhatti, Minhas Malikm, Faisal Essa, Azeem Akhtar, Danish Haroon.—APP
