GUJRANWALA, March 30: The district council unanimously demanded on Saturday that the property tax should be abolished.

The council also constituted a committee to review the recovery of other taxes.

The council meeting was presided over by District Naib Nazim Chaudhry Gohar Zaman.

The proposal was tabled by a union council Nazim advocate Mian Muhammad Salim. Members of both treasury and opposition benches supported the proposal. They said that the excise and taxation department had enhanced the property tax without any survey. It was being recovered on the basis of measurement of properties instead of their valuation which was unrealistic.

Another Nazim of a union council Dr Muhammad Riaz proposed that all Nazimeen and Naib Nazimeen of union councils should be treated as VIPs and should be allowed to park their vehicles free of cost at parking stands besides provision of other facilities.

The council unanimously passed the proposal.

Some treasury and opposition members demanded that funds should be provided to them to initiate uplift projects in their areas before the monsoon.

UPLIFT PLANS: The plan to widen the GT Road’s two-way city portion has been handed over to district government and the Punjab government would issue a special grant of Rs30 million for the purpose.

This was stated by District Nazim Fiaz Ahmad Chattha while presiding over a meeting here on Saturday.

The development schemes being executed under the Khushhal Pakistan and the annual development programme in the district were reviewed at the meeting.

It directed the authorities concerned to ensure that all uplift projects should be completed till June 30.

Senior officials of the Gujranwala Development Authority, Wasa, finance and planning department attended the meeting.

WITHDRAWN: The government has withdrawn the facilities of transport and telephones of all union councils’ Nazimeen and Naib Nazimeen.

According to a notification issued here on Friday, the transport (motorcycle) and telephone facilities previously allowed to all Nazimeen and Naib Nazimeen of union councils stand withdrawn.
