Harris gets pivotal role

AUCKLAND, March 29: Experienced all-rounder Chris Harris was Friday charged with fixing New Zealand’s batting woes as they look to square the Test cricket series against England in the final match starting here Saturday.

Kiwi captain Stephen Fleming Friday confirmed Harris, who hasn’t played a Test since November 1999, would fill the pivotal number four batting slot as the home side look to recover from 0-1 down in the third and final Test at Eden Park.

Harris, who has played 203 One-day Internationals, looked to have finished his Test career at the start of this season but has averaged 95.7 in the domestic first-class competition.

He scored 82 for Canterbury against the tourists three weeks ago. Harris was called up for the drawn second Test in Wellington as cover for injured spinner Daniel Vettori but didn’t play.

With opener Matthew Horne dropped for the Auckland Test and Lou Vincent promoted to open the batting, Harris has filled the gap.—AFP
