40 SPs, DSPs face axe

LAHORE, March 28: About 40 SPs and DSPs are either going to be dismissed from service or compulsorily retired on charges of ‘corruption and inefficiency’ after formal approval by the Punjab governor, senior officials told Dawn on Thursday.

They did not divulge the names of the police officers marked for action because of the desire of the high-ups to complete the job without any legal problem.

The Punjab government had recently constituted a committee to scrutinize the cases of SP and DSP level officers accused of corruption and inefficiency. Punjab IGP and secretaries of the home, services and regulation departments are the members of the committee, headed by Additional Chief Secretary Mian Muhammad Jamil.

The committee, at a meeting two days ago, found the cases of around 40 SPs and DSPs fit for action. The list had been sent to the governor for approval of the intended action against them under the law, the officials said. “They are all Punjab government employees.”

They said the proof against these officers had been collected through their service record, general reputation and cross checking of their assets as against their declared sources of income.

The charges against them had been developed after investigations conducted during the past two years and they would be punished according to the procedure under the law, officials said.

They said the officers to be fired would be proceeded against under the Punjab Removal from Service (Special Orders) Ordinance. Similarly, the remaining would be compulsorily retired under Section 12-A of the Civil Servants Act which allowed the action against officers who had completed 20 years of service.
