GUJRANWALA, March 28: The district council has demanded funds for the welfare of women and minorities.

A council meeting held on Thursday under the chairmanship of district Naib Nazim Chaudhry Gohar Zaman adopted a unanimous resolution urging the government to provide funds for the purpose.

Woman councillor Perveen Sheikh of Wazirabad criticized the government for not providing funds to district government for welfare of women.

She alleged that women were made rubber stamp in local bodies elections despite their 33 per cent representation.

Minority councillor S. B. John also criticized the government for not allocating funds for minorities.

He demanded that 5 per cent funds should be allocated for minorities.

Opposition leader Noman Butt was of the views that the district government has failed to get funds for various development scheme.

The meeting approved levy of taxes on shopkeepers and transports during Besakhi festival to be held in Eminabad and estimated that Rs5 million would be generated.

The Eminabad councillors demanded that 50 per cent income should be allocated to the Eminabad union councils. A committee was constituted to resolve the issue.

KHUSHAL PAKISTAN: The Sadar tehsil council was granted Rs1.8 million for uplift schemes under Khushal Pakistan Programme by the Punjab government.

The tehsil Nazim said at a council meeting that the work on schemes would start soon.

He said Rs600,000 would be spent on the construction of Pasrur Road and Rs1.2 million on Vinia Road.

He assured the councillors that work would be completed within stipulated time.

Meanwhile, Nazims of various union councils urged the district council to provide funds for the construction of streets and drain in remote areas.

DEATH SENTENCE: An additional session judge handed down on Thursday death and fine to a convict in a murder case.

Convict Ashraf had killed a watchman Barkat Ali on the GT Road near Kamoki over a minor issue two years ago.

He was fined Rs100,000.

In case of default of payment of fine, the convict will have to undergo six months’ hard jail.

Meanwhile, a district and sessions judge acquitted Ijaz Ahmad and Muhammad Akram of murder charge giving them the benefit of the doubt.

According to the prosecution, they had killed one Nawaz over a minor issue in Chanian Kamoki village about two years ago.
