PPP leader opposes referendum

MIRPURKHAS, March 27: Former Federal Minister Nawab Mohammad Yousuf Talpur has said the plan of holding referendum for continuing to stay as president, Gen Pervez Musharraf has proved that he is not interested in restoring real democracy.

He said it was strange that while general elections were only a few months away, Gen Musharraf was planning to hold referendum to avert constitutional path to the presidency, the PPP leader said in a statement here on Wednesday.

He said Gen Ayub and Gen Zia had also chosen similar paths.

He opined that referendum plan had substantiated fears of the in Pakistan and abroad that a complete road-map has been unfurled to defy the Constitution, confirm a uniformed President and put in place a handpicked government through “manipulated elections”.

He said the regime’s decisions of national interest were also becoming questionable as king’s parties were being raised against the popular leadership. He added a constant campaign of character assassination against politicians and widening wedge among provinces through kicking off controversial projects would not any national interest.

Yousuf Talpur said that after the appearance of Hamoodur Rehman Commission report it had become imminent for the government to display sagacity and in the national interest learn from history. The patriotic forces of Pakistan qualified for free and fair elections to lead the nation to progress and prosperity and attain a position in the democratic world, he added.
