KARACHI: Pollution causing eye diseases


KARACHI, March 26: Deteriorating environmental conditions coupled with inadequate safety provisions are accelerate eye ailments in the city. Cataract is increasing at a rate of two to five per cent annually in Karachi, mainly due to pollution lack of precautionary measures. Malnutrition is also a contributory factor to cataract, particularly among children.

A surge in allergies and traumatic cataract, with children and youth as major victims, has also been reported from different hospitals in the city. Many of those brought to ophthalmology departments for traumatic cataract are factory who do not adopt necessary safety measures during work.—APP
