Work on Thal canal not stopped: spokesman

ISLAMABAD, March 22: The government on Friday clarified that the work on the Greater Thal Canal project has not been stopped.

A clarification issued by the press information department said: “The actual position is that a meeting under the principal secretary to the chief executive, Tariq Aziz, and attended by secretary, irrigation, Sindh, was held at Chief Executive’s Secretariat on March 18.

“In this meeting, progress on the implementation of the Greater Thal Canal among other things was also reviewed. During the meeting it was decided that the canal shall be called by its actual nomenclature ‘Greater Thal Canal’ as reflected in the 1991 Water Accord and it shall be completed within the time frame. Since PC-1 for the project was not put up to the Indus River System Authority for certification, the project will be got certified by Punjab government from Irsa and then reviewed by the Executive Committee of National Economic Council. These actions will be completed within one-month duration.”
