S.S. Jafri passes away

KARACHI, March 18: Syed Saeed Jafri died of heart failure here on Monday. He was 87.

He leaves a widow, Begum Tayyaba Jafri, and daughter Naheed Jafri Azfar, who is married to Barrister Kamal Azfar, and grandchildren Umer Azfar, Saira Azfar and Farid Azfar.

Namaz-i-Janaza will be held on Tuesday at 9am at the residence of Kamal and Naheed Azfar at 31-F, Block 4, Clifton, near Abdullah Shah Ghazi Mazar.

Mr Jafri appeared in Indian Civil Service examination in 1939. During the first seven years of his service, he served in Uttar Pradesh and Bengal.

At the time of the partition of India in 1947, he was district magistrate in Bara Banki, UP. After Independence, he held the assignments of deputy commissioner, Gujranwala and Lahore, and secretary industries and refugees rehabilitation in the government of Punjab.

In 1954 he was transferred to the federal government where he worked as deputy secretary, ministry of interior, and then as joint secretary and secretary of the ministry of industries.

He was also economic minister, Pakistan High Commission in London. He was chairman Pakistan Steel Mills, and also chairman of the Investment Promotion Board.

At the time of his death he was chairman of Infaq Foundation.
