HYDERABAD: Peasants ask govt to stop work on canal

Bureau Report

HYDERABAD, March 17: The activists of the Sindh Hari Committee, led by comrade Zamir Lashari, staged a token hunger strike outside the press club here on Sunday to protest against the construction of the greater Thal canal.

Talking to newsmen, the leaders of the committee said that the Thal canal was the other name of Kalabagh dam through which thousands of acres of Punjab would be brought under the plough and Sindh would be rendered barren.

They claimed that the Sindh had the first right over water of river Indus.

They demanded that Sindh should be given its due share of water and the greater Thal canal project should be shelved.

The activists of the Sindh Peoples Students Federation (SPSF) also observed a hunger strike outside the press club here on Sunday to protest against the construction of the Thal canal.

They were led by the city SPSF president Mukhtar Hussain Lashari.

Speaking on the occasion, the SPSF leaders said that the Thal canal was an anti-Sindh project and it would destroy the agricultural economy of the province.

They demanded of the government to shelve Thal canal project.

They also demanded to release the PPP activists who were arrested from Sukkur and other parts of Sindh during the protest march against the Thal canal.

They pledged to continue their protest till the acceptance of their demands.
