Equal rights for women demanded

Published March 16, 2002

ISLAMABAD, March 15: The vice-chancellor of Fatima Jinnah Women University, Rawalpindi, Dr Najma Najam, has regretted that women constitute 51 per cent of the country’s population but are still not treated on a par with men in the society.

She was speaking at a seminar on the “Role of women in development of Pakistani society”, which had been organized by Pakistan Academy of Letters at its conference hall on Thursday.

In her presidential address on the occasion, Dr Najam demanded equal rights for men and women. She lamented that while walking on the roads, women had to bear the agony of men’s piercing glares and insulting remarks.

The vice-chancellor said women were doing as much work as men and should be treated in accordance with their status.

Pakistan Academy of Letters chairman Iftikhar Arif said that the rights of the women should not be considered concessional. He emphasised the need for generating public awareness about women issues.— Our Reporter
