KARACHI: Security measures reviewed for Muharram


KARACHI, March 15: Security arrangements in connection with Muharram-ul-Haram have been finalized and made fool-proof so as to thwart any possible act of sabotage.

This was stated by IGP Syed Kamal Shah while presiding over a meeting of police officers at Central Police Office here on Friday convened to review the law and order.

The IGP said stringent security measures have been taken to keep a vigil on mischief-mongers. For this purpose, additional force had been called while police commandos and special squads have been deployed at sensitive places and on the routes of processions.

Besides, secret close circuit cameras have been installed and plain-clothes policemen will also be present to check possible mischief.

The IGP informed that special check-posts are being setup at M. A. Jinnah Road and Nishtar Road while motorcycle riding force has also been alerted. He said leave of police personnel have been cancelled and directives issued to Town Police Officers to remain alert round-the-clock.

He said with the help of police helicopters, the cleanliness situation will be monitored while it will also be used for video filming of suspected elements for the purpose of identification.

In order to monitor the law and order situation, a control room will function at CPO under the direct supervision of IGP. An emergency cell has also been set up in the office of DIG Operation which could be contacted during any emergency.

Through the Provincial Control Room in the office of IG Sindh, the situation throughout the province will be monitored.

The meeting was attended by CCOP Asad Jehangir, DIGs Operation and administration, SP Security and other officials.

The IGP said that instructions have been issued to DIG Traffic for adopting special measures for traffic control during Moharram.

MOTORCYCLISTS: IGP Sindh Syed Kamal Shah has ordered the police to start strict checking of motorcyclists, specially pillion-riders.

According to a press release issued here on Friday, the IGP directed the police not to misbehave with elders, children, handicapped persons and women during checking. He said no negligence would be tolerated.—APP/PPI
