Indian selectors annoyed

NEW DELHI, March 14: India’s cricket selectors have delayed naming the squad for the upcoming tour of the West Indies following an embarrassing defeat against Zimbabwe, officials said Thursday.

The selectors were due to pick the 16-man squad in Kochi Wednesday evening, but put off the meeting after the Indians crashed to a six-wicket defeat to trail 1-2 in the five-match limited-overs series.

“The selectors were very angry at the defeat and decided to pick the touring team only after the series ends,” Indian cricket board secretary Niranjan Shah said,

“They want to see how the players shape up in the last two matches,” Shah said, adding the squad will now be selected in Mumbai on March 21.

Meanwhile, West Indies selectors drafted in four new caps and recalled two players from the wilderness in a 22-strong squad named Wednesday.

Squad: Carl Hooper (captain), Marlon Black, Gareth Breese, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Pedro Collins, Cameron Cuffy, Mervyn Dillon, Daren Ganga, Chris Gayle, Ryan Hinds, Wavell Hinds, Ridley Jacobs, Brian Lara, Runako Morton, Junior Murray, Mahendra Nagamootoo, Darrell Powell, Dinanath Ramnarine, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Devon Smith, Adam Sanford, Stuart Williams.—AFP
