MULTAN, March 14: The Shujaabad police on Wednesday kidnapped the two brothers from the local SSP office when they came there to complain against the police torture.
Reports said a case was registered against Muhammad Asghar and his brother-in-law Shafqat Husain for kidnapping a girl on Feb 1 last. The accused were granted bail before arrest till March 12.
However, four police officials trespassed into Asghar’s house in Shujaabad on March 9, arrested Asghar’s brother Muhammad Akbar and tortured him during four-hour illegal detention.
A Nishtar Hospital medical board issued a medico-legal to Akbar on March 12 which confirmed torture.
On March 13, Akbar and his brother Nazar Husain visited the SSP office to get a case registered against Saddar police Sub-Inspector Muhammad Tufail and six constables where SHO Mahar Wasim Abbas took them away.
The SSP ordered the additional superintendent to inquire into the matter. However, Akbar and Nazar have yet to be released.
PEACE IN MUHARRAM: The Nazim of each union council must create harmony among various religious sects in their respective areas to avoid any untoward incident during Muharram.
This was stated by Multan district Nazim Shah Mahmood Qureshi at a meeting arranged to review security measures here on Thursday. He said the Nazims should visit sensitive areas on 10th of Muharram to ensure proper security arrangements and led the processions.
The responsibilities of the elected representatives had increased manifold after the abolition of the district magistracy, he said.
He would remain in touch with every religious party as his prime object was to ensure peace in Multan, he added.
Mr Qureshi said India had exposed herself by playing with the lives of Muslims in Ayodha and Gujarat. —Nouman
