Death sentence awarded

By Our Correspondent

LARKANA, March 14: The court of the fifth additional sessions judge, Larkana, awarded death sentence to an accused and life imprisonment to nine others in two separate judgments on Thursday.

The judge, Mushtaque Ahmed Kalwar, heard a murder case in which a man, Faiz M. Bajrani, was killed on August 24, 1996 in the jurisdiction of the Drigh police station allegedly by Bashir Ahmed, Naboo, Sharif, and Lal Bakhsh.

The judge heard the case and awarded death sentence to Bashir Ahmed and life imprisonment to Naboo, Sharif and Lal. Each of them would also have to pay a fine of Rs50,000 to the heirs of the murdered man’s family (75%) and government (25%) and in case of failure they would have to undergo rigorous imprisonment for two more years.

The judge gave them the right to appeal against the verdict within seven days of the announcement.

The convicts were later sent to the central prison.

In another case, the judge of the same court awarded life imprisonment to six accused in the murder case of one Haji Sudheer Chandio who was killed in the limits of the Drigh police station on May 26, 1993.

The six who were awarded life sentence were Noor Khan, Imdad, Liaquat, Shakoor, Kambar, and Haji Roshan. All belong to the Marfani Chandio tribe.

Each convict would pay a fine of Rs5,000. In case of non-payment of fine, they will have to undergo another year of imprisonment.

All were sent to the central prison.

SHC: The division bench of the Sindh High Court, Larkana circuit bench, on Thursday asked the district police officer (DPO), Larkana, for lodging an FIR against suspended police Inspector (Investigation wing) Abdul Fatah Bhutto, Assistant Sub-inspector Miran Khan Durrani, and Assistant Sub-inspector Nazar Ali Marri for allegedly keeping five people in illegal confinement at the Kambar police station.

The bench comprised Justice Syed Zawar Hussain Jafferi and Justice M. Afzal Soomro.

The bench in another case ordered the SHO, Wagan police station, who had allegedly kept four people — M. Haroon Tunio, Ali Gul, Gulab, and Ali Mughiri — in illegal detention, to pay Rs10,000 to each detainee as compensation.

The court observed that if the SHO failed to pay the amount then the DPO would deduct the amount from his (i.e. the SHO) pay and ensure the payment of compensation.
