Walking Distance should win today

By Ian Fyfe

KARACHI, Mar 11: Walking Distance, a half bred colt from Flaming Arrow out of Dancing Best, starts off as day’s best, when the Winter Gymkhana Race Meeting gets under way at the Karachi Racecourse Tuesday.

Beaten by half a length last time out by Smiling Senorita going over the sprinting distance of five furlongs, Walking Distance should make amends and grab the spoils for the mere asking in the fourth event.

Just For Fun and Ever Shine should battle it out for the place chances, in a big field of 16 runners going over the sprinting distance of five furlongs.

All in all, seven events have been chalked up on the programme. The first five will be contested over five furlongs and the last two will be run over a furlong more.

The first race begins at 1.00 p.m.

Another runner that should not lose this afternoon is Faisal Farooq’s bay colt Deniro, contesting in the sixth race of the afternoon, with eight runners going over six furlongs.

Deniro however, will be challenged throughout the race by Tomahawk and Hamza Saheb, with Baby Face and The Happy News joining the fray.

The roan gelding Shahdad Star finished second, four lengths behind the bay filly Guarantee two weeks ago under riding boy M. Amjad.

Although penalised to carry 9-3 in the third race, Shahdad Star improving with every run, should get the better of Bach Fly, a handy winner last time out, and Baa Wafa. The thirteen-year-old chestnut Much Better and Be Wafa, another starter from M. Iqbal’s stable will also make their presence felt in this five furlong sprint.

In the opener, Royal Springs, a close second behind stable companion Fantazm last week, is on song to pick up the honours in the opening event.

The bay mare should be followed home by Powerful Tarzan, Night Hero and Money Make Music.

In another big field of 16 runners in the next event, Sajan Black, a dark bay gelding finishing a good third behind Tanveer-e-Sehar and Simple Prayer, two weeks ago under Khalid Nawaz, is fancied in these columns to win this five furlong sprint from Royal Wisdom and Richy Rich, with the speedy Aatish Fishan and Little Sunny leading the field for most part of the race.

Smiling Senorita, a bay filly owned by Mr. Shahrukh has won two races on the trot under her new trainer Iftikhar Ali. If all goes well, this splendid filly from Tanuf out of Uzmina, could complete her hat-trick this afternoon in the fifth race, after ending the pretensions of Blue’s Night, Dushtiyani and Aziz Love.

However, danger lies in the shadows in the form of the 15-year-old bay mare Be Warn.

Only six runners will vie for the top honours in the concluding race going over six furlongs. Although many be fancy the roan gelding Sabza Choice and the bay filly Sandra’s Love, to battle it out for the top honours, our column will go with the swift My Freedom, although penalised to carry a heavy load of nine stones and four pounds. Sabza Choice should edge out Sandra’s Love for the second spot, in a race which should have the racing fans cheering to the echo.
