Araya’s effort goes in vain

By Our Sports Correspondent

LAHORE, March 5: Two goals in the final chukker by Toto Collardin and Captain Omar Minhas, enabled KFC Remounts to snatch a close 5-4 win against Samsung Blues in the National Polo Championship for the Quaid-i-Azam Gold Cup played at the Lahore Polo Club on Tuesday.

After taking 1-0 lead, Remounts bowed down to the pressure of their rivals, who had established a 4-3 lead at the end of the third chukker.

Playing a barren fourth chukker, Collardin converted a 60 yards penalty to equalise the scores 4-4. Omar Minhas struck a field goal minutes later, to carve out a hard fought victory.

In all, Collardin and Omar Minhas scored two goals each while Captain Haseeb added one goal for the winners.

For the losers, Diego Araya registered a hat trick but his efforts went in vain. Taimur Khan scored one goal.

Five goals each by Gerardo Mazzini and Sufi Muhammad Aamir and three by Delia Toto, awarded Remounts/MP a thumping 13-5 win against Nee Punhal in another match of the day. Mazzini also earned a hat trick.

For the losers, brothers Shah Qubilai Alam and Shah Shamyl Alam scored two goals each while Samiullah added one goal.

Remounts/MP took a commanding lead of 8-0 at the end of the third chukker with Mazzini completing his hat trick in the third chukker. Continuing to attack, Remounts/MP  further increased the lead to 11-2 in the fourth chukker and finished the fifth chukker with final score of 13-5.
