SHIKARPUR: Dacoit hideouts destroyed

Dawn Report

SHIKARPUR, March 5: The police operation against dacoits in the kutcha area of Shikarpur District continued for the sixth consecutive day on Tuesday.

The police succeeded in destroying the hideouts of dacoits in the forest near Gura Teghani Pattan.

The police claimed that some of the dacoits were killed and injured, while no casualty was reported except two policemen who were injured in the operation.

While talking to journalists, the additional inspector general of police, Sukkur Range, said that the operation had been conducted on the behest of the Sindh government while special funds had been provided to meet the operational expenses including food, repair of vehicles, medical treatment, purchasing of petrol and other requirements.

He said that the operation would continue in the kutcha areas against the dacoits till all the sanctuaries and hideouts were destroyed to ensure peace and calm everywhere.

The AIG, Police, Nayyar Hasnain Haider said that over 1,500 commandos and police jawans had been deployed to take part in the on-going operation.

He said that the Sindh government had planned to establish police stations, police pickets and posts at various places in the kutcha area to keep a vigilant eye and maintain law and order.

He said that at least 50 policemen would be deployed at every police station.

Our Sukkur correspondent adds: In the anti-dacoit operation in Gora Teghani, two dacoits were killed and several others were injured.

At present, the operation is in full swing and 80 per cent hideouts have been retrieved from the possession of the dacoits.

The area had become a safe sanctuary for dacoits belonging to the Jagirani, Chachar, and Teghani tribes since several decades and had become a no-go area for people.

Police have been provided with APC vehicles, wireless sets, sophisticated automatic weapons, etc., during the anti-dacoit drive.

The AIGP claimed that this time the operation would be taken to its logical end come what may.

During the house-to-house search, the police recovered a huge quantity of arms and ammunition including rocket launchers.

Dozens of vehicles, APCs, bulldozers and excavators were seen clearing the bushes and trees so that dacoits would find it difficult to hide.

At least 25 hideouts of the dacoits were either destroyed or set on fire.

WHEAT PROCUREMENT: The wheat procurement target of 10,500 metric tons with the rate of Rs300 per 40kgs has been fixed for Sukkur district during the year 2001-2002.

The District Food Controller, Sukkur, has asked the wheat growers willing to tender their wheat to the government to apply for the registration of their names before March 15.

The procurement of wheat would only be made at Government Grain Godowns in gunny bags issued by the concerned in charge of the centre.
