Sabza Choice steals show

KARACHI, March 3: Sabza Choice, an eight-year-old roan gelding, sent the raging favourite Shab-e-Noor crashing to defeat, at the Winter Gymkhana Meeting Sunday.

With jockey Ahmed replacing M.Asif II, Sabza Choice trained by Taj Mohammad, scorched the turf over the six furlongs to win handsomely by five lengths over Shab-e-Noor, on the hat trick trail.

Ray Of Light, another runner that had the rider changed when young Khalid Nawaz replaced Saqib in the saddle, was third with Sapno Ki Rani completing the frame.

The day’s racing honours, however, was reserved for jockey Ghulam Shabbir II, who ended the afternoon’s race programme with a splendid double.

Ghulam Shabbir II, partnering Shah Mardan Shah II Pir Pagaro VII’s chestnut filly My Darling in the fourth race, made short work of fancied runners Deniro, Aziz Love and Fly To The Sky and then completed his fine double when he rode home Sandra’s Love in the concluding event.

The victory also enabled trainer Mushtaq Ali Khan to end the afternoon’s programme with a brace of winners.

In another interesting race, Queen Of Hearts, a chestnut filly finally scored a fine victory for owner M.Ateeq after coming from behind with giant strides to get the better of Hamza Saheb and Tomahawk, who themselves were engaged in a keen tussle for the top spot. The winner was ridden by Khalid Nawaz.

The opening race was won by Shining Rock in a start to finish bid, which presented riding boy Abid Ali II with his first victory in his short career.

Tanveer-e-Sehar ridden by riding boy Kashif Ali, just managed to hold off the belated challenge of Simple Prayer, with Sajan Black and front runner Little Sunny completing the frame.

Guarantee, with a much improved performance, sped to victory in the next race, leaving Shahdad Star and Zabyan in her wake.
