ISLAMABAD, March 3: The first meeting of the Election Commission of Pakistan will be held on Monday to review the arrangements for the general elections to be held in the current year.

The meeting, to be presided over by Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retired) Irshad Hasan Khan, will consider a number of steps for making preparations for the elections, including the delimitation of the constituencies.

The Election Commission has been recently reconstituted and its membership increased from three to five.

The members of the EC are: Justice Nasim Sikandar, LHC; Justice Qazi Ihsanullah Qureshi, PHC; Justice Tariq Mehmood, BHC; and Justice Mohammad Ashraf Leghari, SHC.

CEC Irshad Hasan Khan will brief the newly-appointed members of the commission. The first item of agenda is the delimitation of constituencies on the basis of population census.

The EC has made it clear that the National Reconstruction Bureau has no role in the delimitation of the constituencies as an impression was being given by the NRB officials after the increase in the number of seats.

The Chief Election Commissioner, in an official announcement, said the principle of equality of population would be followed as far as practicable in carving out the constituencies.

“All possible care will be given to keep intact the administrative boundaries of districts, tehsils/talukas and Qanungo-Halgas/supervisory tapedar circles.
