Cuban breaks into US mission

HAVANA, March 2: A young Cuban man broke into the US diplomatic mission in Havana on Saturday, but left soon afterward, just days after 21 men stormed the Mexican Embassy in a bid to get off the island, witnesses and US officials said.

“He jumped over the wall at 11.15am,” one of the witnesses told Reuters of the incident at the heavily-guarded US Interests Section on Havana’s seafront Malecon Boulevard.

A US official said the man, apparently under the influence of alcohol, was interviewed inside the building, but left soon after on his own volition. “It’s over, there’s no story,” the official said.

The incident followed Friday’s resolution of a 30-hour standoff at the Mexican embassy after 21 men demanded exit from Cuba when they burst into the building on Wednesday night with a hijacked bus.—Reuters
