Crime ratio in Fata remains low

Bureau Report

PESHAWAR, Feb 27: Contrary to general expectations, crime ratio in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas remains much better than the urban areas of the province since the start of the new millennium.

According to statistics, 10 kidnapping incidents took place in the tribal areas in the last three months as compared with the NWFP where 126 persons were kidnapped in the four months from Oct 2001 to Jan 2002.

During the last three months, North Waziristan Agency remains the most peaceful area where only one incident of road robbery was reported. Whereas, in the same period three murder cases were registered in Kurram and Bajaur agencies. In Khyber Agency one kidnapping and four murders were reported; in Mehmand Agency seven murders took place; in Orakzai Agency three kidnappings, six murders and one case of car-lifting were reported and in South waziristan Agency six kidnappings, three murders and six car-lifting cases were registered.

Contrary to Fata crime figures, in the Frontier province 39 cases of kidnapping were registered in Oct 2001; 35 in Nov 2001; 20 in Dec 2001 and 32 in Jan 2002.

The crime ratio in the NWFP as a whole remains static since the start of the new millennium up to Jan 2002. However, there is a definite increase in crimes of certain categories like murder, assault on others, theft, car-lifting and motorcycle theft.

In the year 2000, the NWFP police registered 90,524 cases, whereas in 2001, the number reduced to 85,319. In 2000, 2,109 cases of murders were registered, while the next year the figure went up to 2,127. In the year 2000, 2,727 cases of attempted murder were reported, while 2,655 cases of same nature were registered in 2001.

The assault on police and others crimes also increased from 269 in the year 2000 to 301 in the next year. While 742 theft cases were reported in the year 2000, the figure increased to 754 in 2001.
