33pc seats for women demanded in legislature

By Our Staff Correspondent

QUETTA, Feb 19: Participants of a seminar demanded reservation of at least 33 per cent Senate, national and provincial assemblies’ seats for women.

The demand was made through a resolution adopted at a seminar, entitled: “Reservation of Special Seats for Women and Minorities in Legislative Bodies,” held at the Quetta Press Club on Tuesday.

The seminar, which was jointly organized by the Aurat Foundation and Chasten Social Welfare Association, Balochistan, was presided over by former federal minister for information and human rights activist Tahir Mohammad Khan advocate.

The resolution expressed concern over reservation of only 17 per cent seats for women in the National Assembly and observed that the presence of more women in the legislatures could make significant impact on laws, policies and the budget.

The resolution demanded that the proportion of women’s seats must be extend to all legislative forums and all special categories within these bodies.
