BANGKOK, Feb 16 - North Korea beat Thailand 4-3 on penalties after the two teams were locked in a goalless stalemate in the 33rd King’s Cup final at Suppachalasai Stadium Saturday.
In the third place play off, Qatar scrapped to a 2-0 win over 10-man Singapore.
In the tenth minute, Thailand’s Sakda Joemdee almost scored with a far post header which went just wide.
Korea’s Chol Ri-kum, a constant threat to the Thai defence, seized on a loose ball in the Thai area after 27 minutes but goalkeeper Kittisak Rawangpa was quick to gather.
Thailand were denied again by Singapore goalkeeper Jon Tae Yong who got down well to save a powerful shot from Nirut Surisiang at the near post in the 43rd minute.
Seconds into the restart, Thailand’s Therdsak Chaiman took the ball in his stride and launched a rising drive from 25 yards which Jon Tae Yong tipped over the bar.
In the 51st minute Thai substitute Thanchai Boriban crossed to Sakesan Pituratana whose looping header was touched over the bar.
A shot from Thailand’s Phaeton Thumb in the 86th minute was parried by the keeper and Sakesan Pituratana fluffed the rebound.
Open play finished in a goalless stalemate before the match was settled on penalties.
In the day’s other game, Singapore had a man sent off as they finished a disappointing tournament having lost all four games while conceding 13 goals.
With 10 minutes Mohd Fadzuhasny Bin Juranai was shown the red card for bringing down Meshaal Moubark Boudawd from behind with the Qatari clear through on goal.
Two minutes later Qatar substitute Seyd Ali Bechr picked up a loose ball in the box and rifled home past Saleh before Mustafa Jalal Musa sealed victory a minute into time added on.—AFP
