‘Construction of small dams to begin soon’

HANGU, Feb 14: The district government will soon start work on the construction of small dams to resolve the long-standing problems of irrigation and drinking water.

This was stated by Zila Nazim Pir Haidar Ali Shah while speaking at a big public meeting at the Balyamin area of Hangu.

He said that the district government would utilize all available resources to alleviate poverty in the area and wipe out corruption from government departments.

The government would proceed against any official found involved in corrupt practices, Haidar Ali Shah said, adding that existing health and educational facilities would be improved and more would be added.

Officials of different nation-building departments and local administration were also present on the occasion.

Later, the Nazim accompanied by district coordination officer, Xen public health and public representatives inspected various sites where the small dams are expected to be built.

TREE PLANTATION: The district Nazim here on Thursday formally opened the spring 2002 tree plantation campaign by planting a sapling in the premises of the DCO offices.

Speaking at a function, he urged the people to plant more and more trees to preserve the environment for future generations. He said that some 37,000 saplings would be distributed among the people free and another 25,000 would be provided from the government nursery for plantation at different localities.

He informed the participants that trees would be planted on 1,600 acres during this tree plantation campaign.

VOTERS LIST: Assistant election commissioner, Orakzai Agency, Haroon Khan Shinwari has said that the fresh voters list of the Orakzai Agency had been handed over to the Nadra after completion.

He was talking to a group of journalists at his office in Hangu on Thursday.

Shinwari said that the election commission staff carried out door-to-door campaign and made announcements over loudspeakers in the mountainous areas of the tribal agency to ensure that more and more eligible people could register their names in the fresh voters list. It took the EC staff 41 days to complete the work, he added.

NASIM WALI: Awami National Party (ANP) provincial president Begum Nasim Wali Khan has claimed that her party would sweep the October elections in the province.

Talking to newsmen here on Thursday, she reiterated that the ANP would continue its just struggle to secure Pakhtoons’ rights from being usurped by those with vested interest.

The ANP politics is based on principles and the party’s founder Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, also known as Bacha Khan, impressed all nations, particularly Pakhtoons, with his philosophy of non- violence and other political ideals.
