Kelly in hunt for success as Woods falters

LA JOLLA, California, Feb. 10 - In-form Jerry Kelly fired a third round 66 to join J.L. Lewis and Mark O’Meara for the lead after three rounds of the $3.6 million Buick Invitational Saturday.

But if Kelly is to pick up another PGA Tour victory, he’ll have to emerge from a pack of eight golfers who are all just one shot apart, including tour veteran John Daly, who continues his remarkable comeback.

Kelly, who won the Sony Open in Hawaii four weeks ago, posted seven birdies and one bogey for his six-under 66, leaving him at 206, 10-under-par.

Lewis and O’Meara are tied with him after Lewis shot a 71 on Saturday while O’Meara, a former Masters and British Open champion, birdied the 18th hole to finish at 70.

Five other golfers are all tied for fourth, just one shot behind the four co-leaders, including Daly.

The crowd favourite shot a 68, which included an eagle on the 15th hole, to sit at nine-under 207.

Kelly appears to have turned his career around in the past few years.

Coming into this tournament he sat second on the PGA Tour Money Leaders List with $880,000 in earnings already this year.

He also finished fifth at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic earlier this year, in addition to his win in Hawaii.

The 35-year-old credits his off-season training for his new-found success.

Tied with Daly are South African Rory Sabbatini, Jay Williamson, whose round of 70 included a hole-in-one on the third hole, South Korea’s K.J. Choi, who continued his consistent play with his third consecutive 69, and Kent Jones, who bogeyed the last to fall out of a share of the lead with his even-par 72.

John Rollins managed a third round 71 to move up to eight-under-par 208 for the tournament, alone in ninth place.

Fred Funk fired a five-under 67 in his third round to sit at seven-under 209, alone in 10th spot but only three shots off the lead.

World number one Tiger Woods stayed in contention with a third round 69, leaving him at four-under 213 for the tournament, six shots out of the lead.
