Irfan shatters own records

ISLAMABAD, Feb 4: Irfan Islam shattered two of his own records Monday as the 50th National Weightlifting championship made a cracking start at the Pakistan Sports Complex.

Irfan, of Railways set the records in the 69 kgs weight category with snatches of 138 kgs and 140 kgs bettering his previous best of 137.5 kgs.

A third record also fell by the wayside, Wapda’s Shujauddin Malik showing his might in the 77 kgs category with a snatch of 146 kgs improving upon his own snatch of 145 kgs.

Although Shujauddin faced little difficulty in winning with a total of 305 kgs, it was not so for Irfan. He was involved in a keen contest with another international, Shahbaz Abdullah in the 69 kgs but in the end emerged winner with a total of 302.5 kgs. Shahbaz had a total of 290 kgs.

69kgs: Irfan Islam (Railways) 140-162.5-302.5, Shahbaz Abdullah Butt (Wapda) 130-160-290, Saghir Ahmed (Army) 100-127.5-227.5

77kgs: Shujauddin Malik (Wapda) 146-160-305, Tariq Azam (Police) 122.5-160-282.5, Naveed Ashraf (Railways) 115-150-265.
