Mazzini’s brilliance not enough

By Our Sports Reporter

LAHORE, Jan 27: Argentinean Gerardo Mazzini pumped in six goals but his efforts were not enough to save the day for Remounts Orange who were beaten 7 1/2-6 by Al-Baraka Islamic Bank in the final of the January Cup polo tournament at the Lahore Polo Club Sunday.

Mazzini scored four goals in the second chukkur and two in the second. But it was the performance of Malik Asif Yar Tiwana for the winners that proved decisive.

Asif scored three goals — two in the second chukkur and third in the third chukkur.

Earlier, Diamond Paints beat Remounts Whites 6-5 to claim  the subsidiary final.

Al-Baraka Islamic Bank had half-a-goal advantage on handicap and Faaiz Rahim Khan scored the only field goal of first chukker to give them a 1 1/2-0 lead.

During second chukker, Mazzini scored four goals for Remounts Orange while Al-Baraka Bank scored three goals to retain a slender 4 1/2-4 lead. Mazzini’s first goals came off with an under the belly shot while the second was with an under-the-tail shot.

Atif Yar Tiwana scored with an under the belly shot before Asif sprung into action to score twice.

In the third chukkur, Asif converted a spot penalty near the goalpost while Taimur Mawaz Khan scored his only field goal to put the winners 6 1/2-4 ahead.

As the fourth chukker began, Mazzini scored back-to-back goals to complete his second hat trick and reduce the deficit to half-a-goal. However, Faaiz put the match beyond Remounts reach when he scored off a combined move.

In the subsidiary final, Umer Sadik scored two goals in the last five minutes to help Diamond Paints pull off a surprise 6-4 victory over Remounts Whites.

Earlier, Gillermo Cuitino (6-goal handicapper from Argentina) scored four goals for Diamonds that included a hat trick. For Remounts Whites, Captain Shahryar struck thrice and Khurshid scored two goals.
