Chenab flow improves

Published January 27, 2002

LAHORE, Jan 26: The flow in the river Chenab returned to normalcy on Saturday after being low for more than three weeks.

The flow became normal after the Pakistan Commissioner for Indus Water Treaty (IWT) wrote a letter to his Indian counterpart pointing out abnormal drop in water.

It also mentioned the possibility of water diversion to canals or a bid to store water at Salal dam that has a storage capacity of 29,000 cusecs. It was also stated that both possibilities violated the treaty. The Indian side is yet to respond to the letter.

According to the Punjab irrigation department officials, total drop in the flow during the last few weeks was around 30,000 cusecs. There was a possibility that India stored the water at Salal.
