Outstanding show by Razzaq and Afridi

DHAKA, Jan 25: All-rounders Abdur Razzaq and Shahid Afridi put in superb performances as Pakistan thrashed Bangladesh by eight wickets and swept the three-match one-day series here Friday.

Razzaq produced a career-best haul of 6-35 to dismiss the opposition for 220 and Afridi produced a hurricane 83 off 47 balls as Pakistan consumed just 35.3 overs to wrap up the day-night match.

The two also showed their worth as all-rounders, Afridi claiming two scalps and Razzaq hitting an unbeaten 25 off 21 deliveries.

Afridi toyed with the Bangladeshi bowling, hitting seven sixes and six fours, including four sixes in one over from left-arm spinner Enamul Haque.

He took 28 runs off that over from Haque, repeating a feat he performed against left-arm spinner Sanath Jayasuriya of Sri Lanka at Nairobi five years back.

Jayasuriya himself holds the world record of 30 runs in an over in a one-day international, which he did twice, while Sachin Tendulkar is the only other batsman apart from Afridi to score 28 in one over.

If Afridi feasted on the toothless Bangladeshi bowling, Razzaq tormented the hapless batsmen with his incisive bowling, after the home team elected to bat.

Razzaq took his third haul of five or more wickets in a one-dayer, erasing Bangladesh’s hopes of stepping up the run-rate after some useful contributions from their top and middle-order batsmen.

Razzaq’s victims included captain Khaled Masud, Aminul Islam and Tushar Imran, as the 22-year-old seamer improved upon his previous best of 5-31 against Sri Lanka at Sharjah in 1999.

Another Pakistan player to have a good day was Younis Khan, who helped himself to a second successive half-century. He scored 66, following up his 73 in the previous match here.

Earlier, spinners Saqlain Mushtaq and Afridi shared three scalps to peg Bangladesh back after they were given a slow but steady start by openers Mehrab Hossain (41) and Javed Omar (35), who put on 88 runs in 25.3 overs.

Tushar Imran (43) and Aminul (31) added 77 for the fourth wicket to bring the innings back on track, but Razzaq came on to remove both batsmen and also took four of the remaining five wickets to fall.

Tushar, who was the highest scorer with 65 in Thursday’s match, missed his second consecutive half-century when he was caught by Shoaib Malik at cover off a leading edge off Razzaq.

Pakistan made two changes from the side that played in the second game here.

Paceman Mohammad Sami and off-spinner Shoaib Malik were brought in for all-rounder Azhar Mahmood and fast-bowler Shoaib Akhtar, who was hit in the head by an object thrown from the stands in Thursday’s match.

Shoaib had to be taken off the ground on a stretcher and took no further part in the match after unruly behaviour by the crowd stopped play for about 30 minutes midway into the Bangladesh innings.

Bangladesh replaced Sanwar Hossain with experienced middle-order batsman Aminul Islam.

Pakistan’s 3-0 verdict in the one-dayers followed a 2-0 sweep in the two-Test series.
