HYDERABAD, Jan 23: The Zila Nazim of Hyderabad, Dr Makhdoom Rafiquzzaman, has asked the Taluka Nazims to prepare mega projects within their Talukas of water and drainage schemes for which funds will be provided by international donor agencies.
He was presiding over a meeting of Taluka Nazims and Taluka municipal officers here on Wednesday.
Dr Rafiquzzaman said that during his recent meeting with Finance Minister Shaukat Aziz, he had assured him that he would ask international donor agencies to make funds available for such projects.
He also asked the Taluka Nazims to send him schemes of water and roads, by Jan 3, and of village electrification by Feb 10, so that funds could be made available to them under the Khushaal Pakistan Programme.
He said an amount of Rs135.44 million has been earmarked for new schemes under this programme.
He said that he will ensure that every Taluka gets its due share from the budget and that people’s problems are resolved.
He advised the Taluka Nazims to prepare fresh schemes as well which will be included in the new budget.
He laid emphasis on the village electrification and added that it should be ensured that 30 per cent of their budget was earmarked for the village electrification programme.
He stressed the need for coordination between Taluka Nazims and the district administration to ensure smooth working and early completion of development schemes.
In this context, he said that he will be presiding over first such meeting on Feb 7, and that such meetings will be held regularly on first Tuesday of every month to review the progress of development schemes.
He said that the civil defence and scouts groups should be activated and sports and cultural activities should be revived.
Dr Rafiquzzaman disclosed that in February sports festival will be organised in Hyderabad and in March a grand All Pakistan Sindhi- Urdu Mushaira will also be held.
He said that Taluka cricket teams should be raised so that inter-Taluka-level cricket championship can be organised in Hyderabad.
He also said that 3 new grounds for sports activities will be prepared in Hyderabad.
The meeting was attended among others by Pir Amjad Shah, Taluka Nazim of Hyderabad, Makhdoom Habibullah, Taluka Nazim of Hala, Abid Bachani, Taluka Nazim of Tando Allahyar, Pir Sudhal Shah, Taluka Nazim of Matiari, besides town municipal officers.
EDUCATION: Presiding over a meeting of the education department officials at the Shahbaz Hall, the Zila Nazim said that the Sindh governor will be requested to ensure that from the next educational year, the subject of English was taught as a compulsory subject from class-I in the district.
He said that in order to raise the educational standard it was important that teachers training institute should be opened at Hyderabad under the district government at the earliest.
Referring to redeployment of teachers/officials, he asked the EDO (Education), Ejaz Mirza, that by Jan 31, redeployment processes should be completed.
He further directed the EDO to ensure that henceforth all textbooks were made available by March 15 for distribution among poor students before the advent of new academic session.
He said that process of printing of text books would be made transparent and tenders will be called by district government. The Zila Nazim called for constituting parents/teachers committees in schools as soon as possible and added that these committees should be constituted by 10th February 2002 and the district government should be informed of their needs so that their school requirements are met before the start of new session.
