KARACHI: Another power breakdown causes water shortfall

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Jan 23: At a time when some parts of the city were recouping with the impact of a shortfall of 22 million gallons of water that was caused due to Tuesday’s power failure at Dhabeji pumping station, another power breakdown occurred at Pipri pumping station on Wednesday.

The KWSB officials told Dawn that since there was no electricity at the Pipri pumping station for two hours — from 6pm to 8pm — the city could not be supplied nine mgd of water on Wednesday.

“In fact, the power supply problem that had developed at Dhabeji pumping station on Tuesday morning, was repeated the same day at 10.45pm at Dhabeji, Pipri and Gharo pumping houses,” the official said, adding that electricity at these pumping stations was, however, restored after only 20 minutes, at 11.05pm.

Attributing the cause of Wednesday’s water shortage problem in certain parts of the city to the two power breakdowns, which occurred on Tuesday, the officials said the power failures had resulted in a shortfall of an altogether 30mgd.

About the power failure that occurred at Pipri pumping station on Wednesday, he said the impact of the short supply of nine mgd would be felt on Thursday in Landhi, Korangi, Malir, Pipri and its adjoining areas.
