MULTAN, Jan 21: Execution of an activist of a banned militant organization convicted of killing two policemen was postponed for month on the direction of President Gen Pervez Musharraf.
Shaukat Hayat, 38, a Lashkar-i-Taiba activist was to be executed on Monday after being sentenced to death by an anti-terrorism court in April 1996.
He had killed two police constables at a check post in 1994 when they tried to stop him while he was riding a stolen motorcycle.
Multan jail superintendent Mahmood Akbar said the execution was put off as the parents of one of the constables had forgiven the convict while talks were going on with the family of the other constable.
NDP: The National Democratic Party (NDP) is emerging as a party of the suppressed people who will replace the so-called seasoned politicians in parliament.
This was stated by NDP central organizer Omar Asghar Khan while talking to newsmen here on Monday.
He said 70 per cent representatives of local bodies had contested the election for the first time, indicating that feudal lords were fast loosing their grounds.
He urged the government to spend 20 per cent country’s budget on providing basic facilities to people.
The NDP was conducting an inquiry into the clash between peasants and police in Okara, and its findings would be given to the Punjab government next week, he added. — Nouman
