Fair distribution of water urged

Published January 20, 2002

BADIN, Jan 19: The Sindh Governor Mohammedmian Soomro has asked the provincial irrigation department officers to ensure judicious and transparent distribution of irrigation water to farmers.

Inaugurating the desilting campaign of the Naseer Canal at New Dumbalo, some 70 kilometres from here on Friday, he said that the president was giving priority to improvement of the irrigation system to help the farmers to increase their produce.

He asked the irrigation engineers to exercise their official powers to stop water theft and to look into the affairs of the existing direct outlets (DOs) so that influential landlords could not receive more than their share of water.

However, he said, lawful proceedings should be adopted to cancel the former DOs.

He said that farmers’ organizations would be formed under the participatory system for proper maintenance of watercourses, minors distributaries and prevent wastage of water.
