Mazzini’s five goals prove decisive

LAHORE, Jan 18: Remounts Orange beat Diamond Paints 7-3 to enter the final of the Pepsi Cup polo tournament at the Lahore Polo Club Friday.

A 7-goal handicap player, Garardo Mazzini, from Argentina, scored five goals, including a hat-trick.

Remounts Orange will meet Al-Baraka Islamic Bank in the  final Sunday at 3 pm.

Al-Baraka Islamic Bank beat Falcons 7-5 1/2 with four points and  qualified from pool “A”. Remounts Orange qualified for the final from  pool “B”  by virtue of better goal average than Remounts Whites and Diamond Paints even though all three teams were tied with two points, each. Malik  Atif Yar Tiwana scored three goals for  Al-Baraka  Islamic Bank  while Dr I. A. Khan Simba scored a hat trick for the losers.

Diamonds  Paints  had advantage of two goals on  handicap  and could score only one goal during play. Lt.-Col. Isfandyar Pataudi scored that consolation goal just before conclusion of the  match by converting a 30 yards penalty-hit.

Mazzini struck form and scored three field goals of second chukker to complete his hat-trick. He  also  scored  the only goal of the third  chukker  on 60 yards penalty-hit. Mazzini converted a spot penalty at start of fourth chukker. For Remounts, Farooq Chughtai and Ahmad Khan also put in a field goal each.

Remounts Orange: Farooq Chughtai (0), Sufi Muhammad Amir  (0), Ahmad Khan (3), Garardo Mazzini (7).

Diamond  Paints: Saqib Khakwani (2), Samiullah  (3),  Lt.-Col. Isfandyar Pataudi (2), Mir Shoaib Ahmad (0).

Falcons  had advantage of half-a-goal on handicap and put  in five goals during play. But Al-Baraka Islamic Bank struck  seven times  to  win the match. For the bank, Atif  scored  three,  his brother  and teammate Malik Asif Yar Tiwana scored two and  Shah Qublai Alam and Faaiz Rahim Khan scored one goal, each.

Besides  Dr I. A. Khan Simba’s three goals for  Falcons,  Ivan Jose  Araya  (6-goal handicap player from Argentina) put  in  two goals. Al-Baraka  Islamic Bank: Faaiz Rahim Khan (1), Malik Atif  Yar Tiwana (3), Shah Qublai Alam (3), Malik Asif Yar Tiwana (3).
